Little Blue Parakeet

Our little friend, Cracker, the blue parakeet, died yesterday. I came home after work and, as I always do, grabbed him some fresh carrot greens I save for him to put in his cage. As I approached his cage, I noticed he wasn't perching. He was laying at the bottom of the cage. I burst into tears.

Bless Carl, he immediately ran over to see what happened. Poor Cracker was gone. I picked him up and cradled him for a few moments while Carl ran to get a box for him. Carl went out back and dug a hole by a tree and we buried him. I said a short prayer, thanking God for the friendship Cracker had given me.

Cracker was our first pet together. We got him right after we got engaged in 2005 and I moved in with Carl in Winfield. Carl named him. He was only 5 years old this month! Carl declared, "We need another bird and it has to be a blue one. He was pretty." I said I'm not ready; to which Carl replied, "I know you. You'll get another one eventuall." I'm sure I will, but I will wait for a time when I can take a few days at home to help it get acquainted.

Wow, what a sad day. I know how you loved him. Sometimes our pets give us the greatest comfort because they love so unconditionally and demand so little (well most do but not Molly).

I was gonna say, my pets are pretty demanding. Even the bird was. As soon as I got home, he'd start screeching for attention and greens and would NOT STOP until he got what he wanted. He'd jump around his cage hollering his head off. Carl would laugh and say, "hurry up, mom! faster! the bird says you're not moving fast enough for him."
