Kennels Suck

last week when we went to St. Louis, we left Missy at the Wheaton Animal Hosp kennels because we couldn't bring her with plus she needed her rabies shot and annual heartworm test. Welllll...when we picked her up she had a horrible, horrible cough! Now, Cookie has it, too! I took her back on Wednesday and they gave her some doxicicline and Cookie, too, but they have not improved one bit! I have never heard dogs cough and hack so badly. It breaks my heart! They won't eat, Missy won't play at all, Cookie plays for a few minutes, but hacks the whole time. Cookie's whole body wretches so badly when he coughs that I was actually in tears last night. Missy is not holding down food or the medicine.

So, I called the vet back AGAIN today and they tell me to bring them both in again. HUH? That's where they caught this mess!! Boy, did I give that vet office an earful this morning! They said there has been an upper respiratory infection going around the kennels in the area and they will treat them again for free, but I'm really pissed off! If they knew there was something going around, WHY didn't they tell me BEFORE I left Missy there?

This tears it....I'm done with kennels. I am going to look into home-sitters from now on. Meanwhile, I have 2 sick and miserable dogs on my hands. Cookie seems to take it with a grain of salt, but Missy is such a baby about it! She whines and hangs on us. Cookie won't eat until she does and Missy won't eat her regular food, so guess who has been cooking hamburger every morning? Normally, I ignore any tricks of theirs to get me to give them something besides their dry food, but Missy went almost 24 hourse w/out eating last week until I realized it was not a battle of wills but her genuine lack of appetite. At 85 pounds, she could stand to lose a few, but I need her to hold down food so she can take her medicine! Annd...Cookie won't eat until she does. Arrgh!

Do they have kennel cough. I thought all dogs had to have a shot for that before a stay?

I hope your babies are feeling well soon. How hard on them and you.

Ben has had a cough too.

Yes, they have had their shots, but, come to find out that the shots only diminish the severeness of the bronchitis (yep, it's a bronchitis) not prevent it entirely.

This stuff happens. Just like kids going to school or daycare, dogs pass stuff around, too. I can only imagine how I'll feel when my children come home with flu or head lice from school!! Susie's daughter, Angela, caught a flu bug at daycare the other day and has been feverish and sick to her stomach, too.

What can you do? Besides hide away from society, not much, right?

I always get a home sitter for Baby. It's not just getting sick they also pickup bad habits from kennels. We had a college student come & house/dog sit for $35.00 for 2 days one night. It was worth it. Baby is NOT a barker and I want to keep her that way.
So sorry your babies are sick. You can find a good dog sitter. I've found a few here.
