Avian Vets

Apparently, avian vets are few and far between. My poor parakeet got injured somehow on Saturday and is limping on his right foot! I have to drive him over an hour to Lisle to see an avien vet. I've called every single vet in Kane county and none can treat him. they all referred me to this guy in Lisle. He better be good, that's all I can say. He had me print 4 pages of questions off the internet to bring with me today!

He is singing right now and still seems affectionate, so I'm hoping maybe it's a sprained or broken foot that will heal. Poor little guy.

Well, $82 and 2 hours in the car later, it's most likely a sprain. The vet gave him some pain medicine and an anti-inflammatory that I have to hold him for and put in his beak! He HATES being grabbed!

He did surprisingly well on the car ride, not particularly traumatized, thank goodness.

Poor little guy. I wonder how a bird gets a sprained foot?

Update: Cracker has moved into his new, 2-story cockatiel cage today and is liking it pretty well. I'm surprised he's taking to it so quickly. His foot is fne now. You can hardly tell he was limping, so I figured it was time to move him to the new digs, since I'd taken everything out of his other cage, anyways, to restrict his movements while he recovered. I had this big cage I'd gotton last fall at a garage sale in mint condition for $5. Such a steal! I've got another one too, Charyn, I could give you when you come the 4th if want to get a bird for the kids.

I've been trying new foods, too, as the vet had suggested and he's been fairly adventerous trying new stuff. Corn went over well.
